Donation Knitting Day
Join me once a month for an evening of donation knitting. We will be creating prosthetic breasts for mastectomy patients at the Little Company of Mary Cancer Center here in Evergreen Park.

We meet at 6:30 p.m. on the 4th Tuesday of the month and we'll be knitting prosthetic breasts using the very clever Beryl Tsang's pattern found on knitty.com. There will be no meetings in June or July and the next meeting will be announced here.

Knitters will also meet on the 1st Thursday of each month at St. Cajetan's Church Parish Center, 2445 West 112th Street, Chicago in the Bernadin Room. There will be no meeting in July and next meeting will be announced.

Little Company of Mary will provide mastectomy patients with one of our beautiful prosthetic breasts!

Please join me for this incredibly worthwhile cause! Everyone's help is heartily needed!

For more information, call the Shop at 708.229.0061.

As you may recall from last year, we knitted these comfy prosthetics for the Y-ME Wig and Prosthesis Salon. Here are some pictures:

• Can't join us? Stop by the Shop anytime to pick up the pattern and yarn, see the sample, and make the prosthetic on your own. The pattern may also be downloaded from knitty.com. You may then return the finished prosthetic to the Shop to be given to the Little Company of Mary Cancer Center.

• Sizes 5 and 6 double pointed needles and 55 yards of a natural fiber, sport weight yarn such as cotton, silk or cashmere are required.

• All materials are available for purchase at the Shop.

• Prosthetic stuffing will be donated by Nana's.

• Assistance with the pattern will be given as needed.

• Experience knitting in the round on double pointed needles is required.

• Non-knitters may purchase a knitted prosthetic for donation from the pattern designer for $65 at www.titbits.ca. You may also make a donation directly to Little Company of Mary or to Nana's Knitting Shop to allow us to provide yarn at little or no cost.

Breast Cancer Statistics:
Post surgery, women cannot be fitted for prosthetics for 3 months. They can, however, wear a lightweight knitted prosthetic.

It was estimated that there would be 7,030 new female breast cancer cases in the state of Illinois in 2007. It was also estimated that approximately 1,740 women would die of breast cancer in Illinois in 2007.
